Why We Built QuadDrive

QuadDrive was born from real frustrations shared by creators and professionals everywhere.

Most SSD enclosures were made of lightweight plastic, overheated easily, or couldn’t keep data safe. Internal Mac storage remained extremely expensive, while USB 2.0 / 3.x drives were far too slow — and couldn’t even be used for RAID protection.

At the same time, NVMe prices rose sharply, especially for 8TB models. Many of us already had spare SSDs lying around, yet no good way to combine them into reliable, high-speed storage.

So we designed QuadDrive: a durable, all-aluminum USB4 enclosure built for speed, stability, and real-world workflows — and for making the most of the SSDs you already own.

QuadDrive FAQ

Will QuadDrive work with my Mac or PC?

Yes. QuadDrive works with most modern USB-C / USB4 / Thunderbolt systems, including:

  • Apple Silicon Macs
  • Intel Macs (8th & 9th Gen)
  • Intel 12th–15th Gen platforms with USB4 or Thunderbolt ports
  • Intel 8th–9th Gen platforms with Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • AMD 8000–9000 series systems with USB4 support
    Note:
Intel 10th and 11th Gen processors do not support high-speed USB-C connectivity, so QuadDrive cannot reach full 40Gbps performance on those systems.

Does QuadDrive require external power?

Yes. QuadDrive needs two USB-C connections for normal operation:

  1. One PD power input
  2. One USB-C data link

It cannot run on a single cable, even with fewer SSDs installed.

This design ensures stable voltage and full-speed performance for all four drives.

For best results, we recommend using our 65W PD Power Adapter, which provides clean and reliable power and includes international plug options.

Can I use fewer than 4 SSDs?

Yes. QuadDrive works with any combination of 1, 2, 3, or 4 NVMe SSDs.

You can expand capacity at any time.

Does QuadDrive support RAID?

Yes. QuadDrive supports RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10, using your operating system’s built-in software RAID tools (macOS, Windows, Linux).

How does software RAID work?

QuadDrive does not use hardware RAID.

Instead, RAID is managed by your operating system:

  • macOS → Disk Utility (Soft RAID)
  • Windows → Storage Spaces / Dynamic Disks
  • Linux → mdadm

Software RAID offers several advantages:

  • More flexibility and easier recovery
  • No vendor-locked RAID controller
  • Better compatibility across systems
  • Performance that matches or exceeds hardware RAID at USB4 speeds

You can freely switch SSD brands/capacities, and rebuild or reconfigure RAID without relying on proprietary firmware.

Does QuadDrive work with PCIe Gen3 SSDs?

Yes. Gen3 SSDs are fully supported, though Gen4 models provide the best performance.
